Putting

The two most important factors for successful putting are determining the speed and direction.

Most golfers have a tendency to decelerate or quit at the ball when they putt. Ideally, we need to get the putter head traveling through the ball to keep the putter head square longer and maintain it's speed.

Try to focus on a point in front of the ball along your intended target line.  It may be a dark or lighter patch of grass...anything that you can find along that line.  Then try to make a stroke to that point while seeing your putter head pass through it.

This will help you make a more solid stroke through the ball.

Peek Away from the Hole

When making short putts many of us can't help but sneak a peek at the hole only to see ourselves miss what we thought would be an easy putt. Keep in mind your head is attached to your shoulders and your shoulders are attached to your arms and hands that are holding the club, so when you pull your head up everything including your putter is pulled off line.  The usual result is an out to in path and a miss to the left (right hand golfers) or right of the hole (left hand golfers).

We know it's tough not to peek so.... let's try to peek away from the hole instead.  On your next short putt, take your normal set-up and make a normal stroke but with one exception you're going to peek in the opposite direction of the hole just before stroking the ball.

Looking away keeps the putter head swinging toward the hole with your shoulders moving down the line on the ideal square path.
